SelfSimilar
Interview by Jade Bassix

Homebase: Seattle, Washington
Affiliates and Websites: dasBEBEN

1. Just who is SelfSimilar? Give us a brief intro. SelfSimilar is Kris Brady from Seattle, WA.

2. How did you get into producing and performing live PAs? I started out using a freeware sequencer called Impulse Tracker about 8 years ago while I was in college. I used that, along with other bits of software, for several years before I bought my gear. Dirty Steve saw me play at a house party for a friend of mine, and I've been part of dasBEBEN ever since.

3. Any tune releases that we can expect in the future? Nothing is for sure yet, but you can definitely expect releases from me within the year.

4. Who are your musical influences? I try to listen to everything. I grew up on a lot of metal, punk and early Hip-hop, but my parents were always listening to classical and jazz, so I got exposed to a lot of different sounds early on. My favorite producer has got to be Amon Tobin though. He is a master of the sampler, and has an incredibly unique sound. Other favorites include Fantomas, and pretty much anything coming out of Def Jux right now.

5. What software or hardware do you use to produce? I sequence everything on the Akai MPC2000XL and run it through an external filter/EQ. I used to track a lot of tunes out with software, but it always felt so mechanical. Using hardware is much more like playing an instrument and a lot more satisfying for me. For cutting up samples, boosting frequencies, or whatever, I use Wavelab. I also have a Korg MS2000 that I use for bass, synth sounds etc.

6. Do you produce any other genres besides drum & bass? I used to make a lot of noise/ ambient tracks when I was strictly into software. I also wrote some breaks until I discovered drum & bass.

7. What are your all-time top tunes?
Bleed for me by Dead Kennedys
Thieves by Ministry
Marine Machines by Amon Tobin

8. Any advice to up and coming Producers? Getting the sound you are after takes a long time. Be patient and eventually you will find it.

9. What has been your biggest gig thus far? Definitely the New Years 2004 show. I got to open for Arqer & Realtime, the room was packed and people were really into my set.

10. Any favorite quotes, last words, or shout outs? Shouts to all dasBEBEN family: Dirty, Siddie, Lukki, Atom, cB. I couldn't ask for better friends. Tara, without you I would be nowhere, and a big thanks to all 206 junglists for the mad love and support.
