1. Just a quick introduction. Who are you, Where are you from and what do you spin? My name is Celene Lew, and I'm an all around California girl - born in Stockton, and lived most of my life in southern California, San Diego, Santa Barbara and currently, Los Angeles. I play Drum n' Bass, House, Breakbeats, Garage, Downtempo, and some stuff in between.
2. What is the best thing about DJing? The best thing about DJ'ing is when I'm in the mix and I'm so into it that everything flows, my whole body moves with the beat and the crowd is feeling the same; it's like this cycle of energy that keeps growing and evolving.
3. Do you produce? If so, where can we check out some of your music? Yes, I've collaborated on some tracks with friends, and my goal is to spend more time in the studio in the near future. Downloads are available in the music section of my site, www.djsyrena.com
4. Who are your musical influences? There are so many! Drum n Bass - wise, I'd say that the Good Looking crew, early Goldie, Roni Size and Photek put out the sounds that influenced my decision to start DJ'ing. I also really enjoy Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation, Bjork, Everything But The Girl, and classic jazz and blues artists like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.
5. Tell us about the current state of the drum & bass scene in Los Angeles? The Los Angeles scene has grown incredibly over the last year! There are so many events happening lately, and the sound has advanced to incorporate a wider range of the genre, especially the liquid funk and atmospheric styles. It is reaching an ever-growing audience that appreciates a broad range of music.
6. You have a new website www.selectress.com. What is the inspiration and focus of this site? Selectress is a project I started to establish a presence in the Los Angeles area for fellow female DJs and producers. The focus is to provide an outlet for my peers to gain exposure, network and raise the level of professional credibility for women in a male-dominated industry.
7. What are your all-time top tunes? One and Only - PFM, Hide U - Kosheen, Bombscare - 2 Bad Mice, Plastic Dreams - Jaydee, there are many more, but I'd say the 1st 2 are my favorites as I became a DJ, and the latter 2 are my favorites as I fell in love with the underground scene.
8. Any words of advice to up and coming DJs? Love the music you play, practice a lot and stay humble.
9. What has been your biggest gig thus far? There are gigs that have been defining milestones for me, and others that were simply, a lot of fun, so it's hard to say. I got to play in London, November 2003, so that is my biggest milestone so far. . .
10. Anything else you'd like to share? Live your dreams, stay true to yourself and have fun.
